The square topsail schooner Lynx has been designed and built to interpret the general configuration and operation of a privateer schooner or naval schooner from the War of 1812, the original Lynx being a “letter of marque” Baltimore Clipper commissioned during the opening days of the war. Serving effectively as a blockade-runner and offensive weapon of war, she was among the first ships to defend American freedom.
Dedicated to all those who cherish the blessings of America, Lynx sails as a living history museum, providing inspiration and resolve at this time in our nation’s history. She is fitted with period ordnance and flies flags and pennants from the 1812 era. To complement her historic character, the Lynx crew members wear period uniforms and operate the ship in keeping with the maritime traditions of early 19th century America. Lynx also operates as a sail training vessel to serve as a classroom for the study of historical, environmental, and ecological issues. In addition, she undertakes “port to port passages” that lead to personal growth and awareness through the experience of life at sea aboard a traditional sailing vessel.

One of five sister ships built for sail training in Germany in the 1930s,Eagle was included in reparations paid to the United States following World War II and the Coast Guard took her over as a training ship.
Aboard the Eagle, cadets have a chance to put into practice the navigation, engineering, and other skills they are taught at the Coast Guard Academy. As underclassmen, they fill positions normally taken by the enlisted crew of a ship, including watches. They handle more than 20,000 square feet of sail and more than 20 miles of rigging. Over 200 lines must be coordinated during a major ship maneuver and the cadets must learn the name and function of each. As upperclassmen, they perform officer-level functions. For many, their tour of duty aboard the Eagle is their first experience of life at sea and it is here that they learn to serve as the leaders they will one day become in the Coast Guard.
Eagle is safely maintained and operated by six officers and 49 crew who are stationed on board for two to three years at a time. This experienced core provides leadership and coaching to over 700 trainees and 60 short term temporary crew each year.

The 284-ton barque Picton Castle is a traditionally rigged and operated sail training ship based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada, but best known for her voyages around the world.
Over the past decade, the ship has made six complete circumnavigations of the globe, as well as a year-long voyage around the Atlantic Basin, two trips to the Great Lakes and numerous runs up and down the East Coast of the United States and Canada. Along the way, she has introduced more than 1,000 people to the challenges and rewards of square-rigged sailing. As a training ship, all those on board work, stand watch, and learn the ways of a square-rigged sailing ship. Onboard workshops are conducted in wire and rope rigging, sail making, boat handling, navigation and practical seamanship.
The ship is outfitted to the highest standard with safety gear and equipment. She is a strong, seaworthy home afloat for adventurers devoted to learning the art of deep-water sailing. In 2006, Tall Ships America presented Picton Castle with their "Sail Training Program of the Year" award.

The Galeón Andalucía is a replica of a 16th-17th century galleon, the only one in the world that sails in present days.
These ships were the type of vessel used by the Spanish Crown for maritime expeditions during the 16th through the 18th centuries. Galleons were intended to discover and then establish trade routes between Spain, America and the Philippines islands, and formed what was then called the “Fleet of the Indies”. For three centuries, these Spanish galleons crossed the Atlantic Ocean back and forth, sailed around the Caribbean Sea and the American coasts, and covered the Pacific route as well. They carried plenty of seamen, merchant traders and settlers, while their holds bore the fabulous loads resulting from American and Asian trade.

She has navigated the Pacific and Indian oceans, crossed the Atlantic Ocean, and her wake has spread over the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the South and East China seas, the Aegean Sea, the Bosphorus strait, the Caribbean Sea and the whole East Coast of the US, covering thousands of nautical miles in an attempt to evoke her ancestors.
THE REPLICA OF THE GALLEON

Historical research was then followed by structural design, a work that took 6 months, and later on followed the construction of the galleon, which lasted 17 months and employed 150 people until her launching in Punta Umbría (Huelva, Spain) on November, 2009. The replica has been designed and built by Ignacio Fernandez Vial, a naval engineer and historian, commissioned by ship owner, the Nao Victoria Foundation.
During construction, a completely original and innovative technique was used: the hull and decks were built up in layers of fibreglass and after that the whole structure was lined with wood. It was the first time this method was applied to any ship heavier than 500 tons meant for oceanic sailing.

Storms, hurricanes, water leaks, diseases or pirate attacks would threaten crew’s lives constantly: “we are three or four inches close to death, which is the thickness of a vessel plank”.
The feeling of danger was very present and death lurked everywhere; it was only the skills of officers and seamen what preserved them from sinking. But fate would not always smile on them, and many of those men and women who embarked in search of new opportunities for their lives found an anticipated yet final destination and now rest on the bottom of the sea. Here can be found the cannons which protected the galleon against pirate or corsair attack. Although all galleons belonging to the Fleet of the Indies would sail together forming groups of 30 ships or more and were escorted by war ships to protect them, they had these cast iron cannons for their own protection, and in case of need they were shot by the soldiers aboard.

The round wooden artifact right in the middle of this deck is a capstan, or manual winch. It would be used to help in heavy loads maneuvering or when hoisting the anchors.
The Gun deck would also accommodate most of the crew members. Aside from officers, who did enjoy the privileges of cabin accommodation, the rest of the passengers had to look for any viable space on deck where they could keep their boxes or “ranchos” containing a few of their belongings and place their mats in order to sleep.
70 to 100 people would sleep in here, on their mats or hammocks. An estimated 16 sq. ft. of habitable room corresponded to each person.
In the fore part of this deck are the docking-manoeuvring area and the orlop-deck with 30 bunk beds for the crew; the aft area holds the rudder machinery and another docking-manoeuvring area.

Oliver Hazard Perry is the first ocean-going full-rigged ship to be built in the US in 110 years and is named for the young Rhode Island hero of the Battle of Lake Erie who on September 10, 1813 wrote, “We have met the enemy and they are ours…”
The ship’s business is conducted from offices in Perry’s restored former home in Newport, RI. Oliver Hazard Perry is a platform for a wide range of sail training and educational programs. Schools and colleges craft their own custom programs of varying duration on the ship. Adult programs are offered directly through the ship’s office and with our partners at Ocean Navigator/Professional Mariner Magazines. The ship has been designed to serve both the able and disabled.
Sail training participants aboard Oliver Hazard Perry live and work alongside the professional crew as integral members of the ship’s company, becoming part of the team that sets and trims the sails, guides her voyage and animates her spirit. No prior experience is necessary and no extraordinary fitness is required.

The schooner Bowdoin is the flagship of the Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) sail training fleet and the official sailing vessel of the state of Maine.
Built in 1921 for exploring Arctic waters, she is one of the strongest wooden vessels ever constructed. Between 1921 and 1954, she made 26 voyages above the Arctic Circle under the command of explorer Donald B. MacMillan.
Today, Bowdoin serves the students of MMA, the state of Maine, and New England, sailing in the waters of New England, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Labrador, and Greenland. In MMA’s Sail Training Curriculum students learn to sail, maintain, and manage traditional and modern sailing vessels. Sail training afloat is performed on the Academy’s fleet of over 50 vessels, including Bowdoin, a smaller schooner, a fleet of Colgate 26’s and racing dinghies, several large ocean racing and cruising yachts, and numerous other sailing and power vessels from 15 to 500 feet. Since being purchased by MMA in 1988, Bowdoin has returned to the Arctic three times with MMA students, continuing the tradition of Admiral MacMillan in carrying young people to the northern latitudes.

The schooner Tree of Life, launched in 1991, was built in Nova Scotia, Canada.
She sleeps 12 in three cabins and the fo’c’sle. Her hull is a composite of strip planked clear fir and Kevlar saturated in epoxy and sheathed in fiberglass. Her deck is fir, spars are spruce, and brightwork is Honduran Mahogany. The interior is paneled in koa and teak. The Tree of Life, her owners, a crew of four plus two trainees, sailed out of Newport in October 2002 on a three year circumnavigation. In 2003, Tree of Lifespent five months in Auckland, New Zealand via Bora Bora, the Southern Cooks and Fiji for the America’s Cup. She has sailed the Indian Ocean to Capetown, South Africa, the Atlantic to Antigua for Classic Race Week, St Barth’s, St Martin, Turks & Caicos, the Bahamas, Palm Beach and home to Newport, RI. he S/V Fritha is a 74-foot tall ship used for training purposes at Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI) and is widely available for charters to the public. Students enrolled in Northeast Maritime Institute’s Associate Degree of Applied Nautical Science program have the exciting opportunity to train and experience life at sea aboard the Fritha.
Launched in 1986 in New Zealand and named for the heroine in Paul Gallico’s book The Snow Goose, the brigantine Fritha was built in New Zealand by traditional methods of craftsmanship that have resulted in a beautifully unique and rewarding sailing experience. NMI’s Associate Degree of Applied Nautical Science program allows students to participate in all vessels operations aboard the Fritha including navigating, steering, and setting sail as well as daily maintenance duties. During this amazing educational experience, students work side by side with licensed instructors and highly trained crew while earning sea time towards their Mate 200 ton, Master 100 Ton Near Coastal and Able Seaman United States Coast Guard licenses. Fritha can accommodate up to six passengers and is ready to take family and friends on an exciting and educational adventure.
